Coldplay have announced the first leg of their North American tour for their upcoming fourth album, Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends. Eight Canadian shows have been scheduled so far.

Before the tour starts, Chris Martin (vocals, keyboards, guitar), Jonny Buckland (guitar), Guy Berryman (bass) and Will Champion (drums) will perform free shows at London, England's Brixton Academy on June 16 and New York City's Madison Square Garden on June 23. Details on how to win tickets are available on the group's website.

Tickets for Coldplay's previously announced performance at the Pemberton Festival in Pemberton, B.C. are on sale now. They'll be available for the Edmonton show on June 13 and a day later for the remaining Canadian dates.

Coldplay made Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends' first single, "Violet Hill," available for free download on April 29. More than two million people downloaded it over the week-long free period, with 300,000 of those taking place within the first hour. Hard copies of "Violet Hill" hit record shops on Tuesday.

Here are Coldplay's Canadian dates:

  • July 27 Pemberton, BC @ Pemberton Festival
  • July 29 Edmonton, AB @ Rexall Place
  • July 30 Calgary, AB @ Pengrowth Saddledome
  • Aug. 1 Winnipeg, MB @ MTS Centre
  • Oct. 20 Montreal, QC @ Bell Centre
  • Oct. 21 Ottawa, ON @ Scotiabank Place
  • Oct. 29-30 Toronto, ON @ Air Canada Centre
